7-Day Rongai Kilimanjaro Trek

The 7-Day Rongai Kilimanjaro Trek, starting from the north near Kenya, offers a gradual ascent, fewer crowds, remote wilderness, and possible wildlife encounters, making it a unique and quieter route to the summit.

Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,800m/5,900ft) to First Cave Camp (2,600m/8,400ft) 

  • Elevation Gain: 760m/2,500ft
  • Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
  • Habitat: Rainforest
  • Begin the trek with our team a drive to Rongai Gate, located near the Kenya border. After registration, hike through the forest, where you may spot wildlife. Enjoy lunch on the trail before continuing to the First Cave Camp, where you’ll spend the night. This route is quieter and offers a good chance of wildlife sightings like buffalo’s and antelopes .


    Day 2: First Cave Camp (2,600m/8,400ft) to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m/11,810ft)

  • Elevation Gain: 1,000m/3,280ft
  • Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
  • Habitat: Moorland
  • Hike through Kilimanjaro’s moorland, with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak. The Rongai Route’s relatively short but steep segments make for a faster ascent.



    Day 3: Kikelewa Camp (3,600m/11,810ft) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m/14,200ft)

  • Elevation Gain: 730m/2,390ft
  • Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)
  • Habitat: Moorland and Rocky
  • This day focuses on acclimatisation. Hike to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located below Mawenzi Peak, offering breathtaking views of both Mawenzi and Kibo.



    Day 4: Acclimatisation at Mawenzi Tarn Camp

  • Distance: 4-5 km (2.5-3.1 miles)
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
  • Hike higher in the morning, then return to Mawenzi Tarn for the afternoon rest. This will help your body adjust to the altitude.



    Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m/14,200ft) to Kibo Camp (4,750m/15,580ft)

  • Elevation Gain: 420m/1,380ft
  • Distance: 9 km (5.6 miles)
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
  • Cross the lunar landscape of the saddle to reach Kibo Camp, situated beneath the Kibo cone, with views of your final destination.



    Day 6: Kibo Camp (4,750m/15,580ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,340ft) to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft)

  • Elevation Gain: 1,145m/3,760ft
  • Elevation Loss: 2,175m/7,140ft
  • Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles)
  • Habitat: Arctic and Alpine Desert
  • Begin your summit push around midnight. After a challenging ascent, reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After taking photos, descend to Horombo Hut for rest.



    Day 7: Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft) to Marangu Gate (1,800m/5,905ft)

  • Elevation Loss: 1,920m/6,295ft
  • Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
  • Habitat: Rainforest
  • Descend through Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest to Marangu Gate, where vehicles will be waiting to return you to Moshi/Arusha and end your 7-Day Rongai Kilimanjaro Trek

    Visa
    To enter Tanzania, most traveler's require a tourist or business visa. You can apply for an e-visa online or obtain a visa on arrival at designated entry points. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and has one blank page. Apply through the official Tanzania Immigration website for an e-visa or obtain a visa on arrival at major entry points.



    Yellow Fever
    Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for travelers arriving from Countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. This also applies to those who have transited through such countries for 12 hours or more. Upon arrival, you must present a valid vaccination certificate.



    Zanzibar Insurance Policy
    As of October 1, 2024, Zanzibar requires all visitors (excluding residents) to obtain mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) for the duration of their stay, up to 92 days.

    Where to Buy:
    Only available through Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) International travel insurance policies are not accepted; only the ZIC policy meets the entry requirements. It's advisable to purchase the insurance in advance to avoid delays upon arrival.
