Though steep and demanding, it requires no technical skills, making it accessible to trekkers in good physical condition. This iconic route promises unforgettable experiences and panoramic landscapes, culminating in a triumphant summit.

Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Campsite

  • Elevation: 1830m to 3030m
  • Distance: 13 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest

    • Begin your trek through the rainforest to Machame Campsite for dinner and overnight.

    Day 2: Machame Campsite to Shira Campsite

  • Elevation: 3030m to 3800m
  • Distance: 9 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

    • Trek through valleys and ridges to Shira Camp, offering views of Mount Meru, Shira Plateau, and Kibo Peak.

    Day 3: Shira Campsite to Barranco Campsite via Lava Tower

  • Elevation: 3800m to 3950m
  • Distance: 13 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

    • Ascend to Lava Tower for acclimatisation, then descend to Barranco Camp at the base of the Barranco Wall.

    Day 4: Barranco to Karanga Camp

  • Elevation: 3950m to 4040m
  • Distance: 6 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

    • Ascend the Barranco Wall to 4200m for acclimatisation, then trek through ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp for a hot lunch. After a rest, take a brief acclimatisation hike toward the southern ice field before returning to camp for soup and overnight.

    Day 5: Karanga to Barafu Hut 

  • Elevation: 4040m to 4680m
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

    • Trek to Barafu Hut, tough due to altitude, with strong winds from Kibo Peak. After arrival, have an early dinner and rest for your midnight summit attempt.

    Day 6: Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp 

  • Elevation: 4680m to 5895m to 3820m
  • Distance: 15 km
  • Hiking Time: 10-12 hours
  • Habitat: Desert & Ice

    • Summit at Uhuru Peak just before or after sunrise. Descend to Barafu Camp for lunch, then continue down to Millennium Camp for overnight.

    Day 7: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Elevation: 3820m to 1990m
  • Distance: 9 km
  • Descending Time: 5 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest

    • Descend through the forest to Mweka Gate, sign out, and return to the hotel for a certificate presentation and celebration end of 7-Day Kilimanjaro Machame Trek.

    Visa
    To enter Tanzania, most traveler's require a tourist or business visa. You can apply for an e-visa online or obtain a visa on arrival at designated entry points. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and has one blank page. Apply through the official Tanzania Immigration website for an e-visa or obtain a visa on arrival at major entry points.


    Yellow Fever
    Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for traveler's arriving from Countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission.This also applies to those who have transited through such countries for 12 hours or more. Upon arrival, you must present a valid vaccination certificate


    Zanzibar Insurance Policy
    As of October 1, 2024, Zanzibar requires all visitors (excluding residents) to obtain mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) for the duration of their stay, up to 92 days.
