The 5-Day Marangu Kilimanjaro Trek, or “Coca Cola Route,” is a popular and affordable option for summiting Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its ease, well-maintained paths, and hut accommodations, it’s ideal for beginners. The trek spans diverse landscapes, leading to a rewarding summit experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest
  • After breakfast and a briefing, drive to Marangu Gate for registration. Begin your 5-Day Marangu Kilimanjaro Trek through the lush rainforest, passing unique flora and possibly spotting Colobus monkeys along the trail. Arrive at Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight. A short excursion to Maundi Crater offers excellent views of the surrounding area.


    Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland
  • Start your trek through the rainforest, transitioning into moorland. The trail ascends gently, offering views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks on clear days. Along the way, you’ll see unique vegetation such as giant lobelias and groundsels. Arrive at Horombo Hut for dinner and rest.


    Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
  • Continue your climb across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape changes to an alpine desert, with sparse vegetation and dramatic views of the mountain. Arrive at Kibo Hut, where you’ll have dinner and rest in preparation for your midnight summit attempt.


    Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), descending to 3,720m
  • Distance: 22 km (ascent and descent)
  • Hiking Time: 10-15 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic to Moorland
  • Start the final ascent around midnight, trekking through the cold and thin air to reach Gilman’s Point at the crater rim. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, arriving in time for sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Kibo Hut for a brief rest and lunch before continuing to Horombo Hut for overnight.


    Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m
  • Distance: 20 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland to Montane Forest
  • Complete your descent through moorland and lush rainforest, enjoying your last views of Kilimanjaro. Arrive at Marangu Gate to receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for rest and celebration.

    Visa
    To enter Tanzania, most traveler's require a tourist or business visa. You can apply for an e-visa online or obtain a visa on arrival at designated entry points. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and has one blank page. Apply through the official Tanzania Immigration website for an e-visa or obtain a visa on arrival at major entry points.



    Yellow Fever
    Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for travelers arriving from Countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. This also applies to those who have transited through such countries for 12 hours or more. Upon arrival, you must present a valid vaccination certificate



    Zanzibar Insurance Policy
    As of October 1, 2024, Zanzibar requires all visitors (excluding residents) to obtain mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) for the duration of their stay, up to 92 days.
